Sport at St Mary's

We have a proud heritage of sporting achievement at St Mary's and we encourage all children to be active on a daily basis.

We have a dedicated Daily Mile track which all children run or walk on every day. We have many extra-curricular sports clubs from football, rugby, netball and tennis to dance and multi-sports clubs.

Sports Day 2025

Brenig got their first Sports Day win in convincing style in 2025 as they gained the most points from the races and competitions that took place on a gloriously hot May day. The children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 competed in running, balancing and obstacle races in the morning and Ogwen took a small lead going into the afternoon competitions. The team of Year 6 helpers did a great job helping the morning run smoothly. In the afternoon, we had Year 9 and Year 12 helpers from St Richard Gwyn helping to manage proceedings and keep things running smoothly. The children in Years 2,3,4,5 and 6 competed in individual running races, house relay races and potted sports. There was great spirit shown by all and it was lovely to see so many parents and carers supporting the children. Thank you, once again, to the PTA who provided refreshments on the day.

Sports Day 2025

On a gloriously warm day in May 2025, we had two separate sports day sessions - one for the children in Nursery to Year 1 and one for the older children.

Sports Day 2024

Sports Day 2024 was won by Ogwen, breaking Tegid's monopoly over the prize. In a very closely-fought competition, Ogwen won by 3 points! Children took part in both running races and potted sports, earning points for their houses. Once again, the children were really well supported by the assembled parents, grandparents and carers. It was a lovely atmosphere and one that celebrated competition and fair play. Thank you to the PTA for providing refreshments!

Flintshire Champions 2024!

2023/2024 was an amazingly successful year for sport at St Mary's.

The Year 3/4 boys won the Elwyn Owen Cup for the first time in the school's history, meaning they were champions of Flintshire.

The Year 5/6 boys team won the Flint League, The Eccleson Cup, The Hardwick Shield and the Wrexham Diocesan championship to complete a fantastic quadruple! As a result of their success in the Flintshire competitions, they qualified for the national finals, where they came a creditable 7th in the country. This was an amazing achievement, never done before by any of our school teams.

The indoor athletics team won the Flintshire indoor athletics competition in Deeside and the Wrexham Diocese competition in Rhyl.

The path to success has not always been smooth and all of the teams have tasted defeat on their way to winning the competitions. Throughout all of the competitions, the boys and girls have shown great sportsmanship and humility in their achievements. Da iawn, pawb!

Sports Day 2023

In June 2023, we dodged the showers to hold another great Sports Day that was won by Tegid for the second year in a row. Brenig were the winners of both of the relays so won the relays trophy before Tegid were awarded the shield for another year. It was lovely to see so many parents, grandparents and carers there to support the children. Thanks to the PTA for providing refreshments!

Sports Day 2022

In June 2022, we welcomed parents, carers and other family members to Sports Day for the first time in three years. It was a scorching hot day and we crowned Tegid as the overall winners of our house competition. There was a lot of great spirited racing throughout the day. Da iawn pawb!
